Road, Road Go Away

Where I live summer is road construction season.  By summer I mean mid April til Christmas.  By road construction I mean miles and miles of torn up highways and byways, detours aplenty, and inexplicable lane changes.  The signs sprout like weeds:  "Construction Ahead Expect Delays" or "Lane Reconfiguaration Expect Delays."  The most terrifying aspect is the complete lack of "shoulder' usually accompanied by a three to five foot drop off into a gravelly abyss.  Who knows what would happen to a car or human slipping inadvertently over that ever so freaking close edge?  Makes me shiver to contemplate.  But I am no longer afraid.  NO LONGER AFRAID!  Because, Hark!  Today I realized two crucial factors I had never considered. First:  "Rough Grooved Surface"  really means all the pesky axle destroying cracks, sinkholes, and pavement obstructions have actually been scoured completely away as if by a giant combing device.  Smooooooooooth sailing (or driving rather) accompanied by an entertaining hum as the tires encounter the new grooves. Second:  People are really courteous.  One guy making a left turn tried to wait long enough to let me pull out and away from a crowded intersection.  Nobody honked.  Nobody tried to cut in front of anybody.  And nobody waited til the literal last minute to merge. (One of my personal most hated driving bad behaviors.  Maybe it was because I was severely dehydrated and didn't have to pee; but I enjoyed the ride today even with the construction delays.  Of course, I might be singing a different tune come Christmas.
