Right now as I am battling approaching invalidism, poverty, unemployment, and despair my days have two welcome respites.
Once a week my Darling Eldest Daughter and her Cunning Child literally grace me with their presence (presences?) and come to Elder House and do my smelly laundry. I think she does it as a penance. Whatever her motive I am hideously grateful. She is gorgeous in sight and spirit and takes my breath away. Her kid is pretty special, too. He let me play Angry Birds on their fancy phone; but only for a smidge.
What a dreamboat! He also took some pictures. I am saving those for another post. My Thursdays are full because of these two and I am very happy on Thursdays.
Last Friday I had another special treat. My beautiful Middle Daughter (no longer Recently a Bride as her first wedding anniversary has happened) met me at the local Big Box and we grocery shopped. I arrive before her and ride around on the electric cart for crippled people. Filling the basket with cans and boxes and non-frozen items. Everything I can reach on my own. I am becoming a master at snatching containers from high shelves with one of my trusty canes. The trick is to get the item to fall directly into the basket itself and not try to catch it on the downward trip. Not possible for glass, however. Daughter arrives about an hour later and I follow her around while she does her shopping.
We try to converse. Difficult because the Big Box is always quite full and Daughter is a fast moving shopper. Still, it is a joyful time for me. I am behind her most of the time and she has a great ass. I watch people watching her and I smile to myself. She buys a lot of lotion and kitty litter. She helps me load the produce I can't reach and (Bless her heart!) loads all the stuff into the back seat of Ancient Vehicle. At Elder House she carries all of it-ALL OF IT!!!!- into the building! Yee gods! I am overwhelmed! What a great Friday that one was.
But this shopping trip took place five days after the mind crush of a storm we had. Entire towns were (and some still are) taken off the grid. How did I know the Big Box would have power? What they didn't have was yoghurt and cheese and frozen dinner rolls and breakfast sausage. All items that need refrigeration, yes, but are they vital "waiting out the power outage" foods? Hhhhhhmmmm.
What items were stocked aplenty were generators ($637.00) and gas cans in two sizes. Cashing in on the demand I suppose is smart marketing. Price gouging? I'm not sure and thank heaven I didn't have to find out. This time at least.
And so, I'm thanking my children and the Big Box. Guess which ones I cherish more?
