For the record I am not simply whining about the paucity of the LINK benefits my neighbors receive. And, frankly, I doubt that any of them feel anything other than gratitude. This is a decidedly older generation and they are grateful for the little that they have. Some are ashamed to admit that they rely on such a program in order to eat. Overwhelmingly these folks have done their best in their younger, fitter, more productive days to be good citizens. If they wind up with Ramen noodles six nights a week they are not going to complain.
The point I want to make, well one of them, is that these people aren't asking for much. Indeed they do not get much. I don't think they (or anybody) should be belittled for accepting food benefits. They PAID into the system for years. Now that the wheel has turned they are seen as leeches or beggars. Even a so called "welfare mom" deserves to feed her family. If bad choices in nutritional selection are made then that can be remedied by other methods than recrimination and invective. If government money is wasted I'd much rather it be used on women, children, and elders with hungry tummies.
Let the military and the political bureaucrats feed themselves on $100 each month. Then watch budget proposals begin. Maybe.
