Blanket Sandwich

The weather has moderated somewhat in the past few days here at Casa Mommy Dearest.  And by "weather" I mean the temperature, humidity, and precipitation outdoors.  Emotional weather...meh.  But that's a blog for another day.

This room has two outside walls and while I am certain they are adequately insulated; once the sun sets it is usually fuh-fuh-fuh-freezing in here.   Also the room sets atop a very large, unheated basement which does not encourage the retention of any daytime warmth. Cool temps make for better sleeping, but I can't breathe through frozen nostrils.  Hence the blanket sandwich.

                                                          Layer Number One:

The ginormous crocheted blanket I made years ago when I was a married lady.  Many, many cool colors and it was the first time I tried this particular pattern.  This blanket is heavy as hell.  I use it without a top sheet in the wintertime because it really is warm.  Even though the spaces catch on my toes it is the best.

Layer Number Two

This is a woven kind of serape thing given to me in the last century by (believe it or not)Angry Sister.  I had told her I wanted to learn to quilt and she gave me this and a purchased quilt, I think because she couldn't decide on one or the other.  The quilt has long since fallen apart and been recycled into other projects.  The woven blue and white lives on.  It provides nice insulation for the spaces in Layer Number One.

Layer Number Three:

My white chenille bedspread.  Never had one as a kid.  Never had one in college.  Finally splurged and bought this from the Vermont Country catalog also back in my married lady days.  We had a standard double bed at the time and I purposely purchased a king size bedspread.  I love the way it "puddles" on the floor when I actually make up the bed.  And the chenille makes me think of my grandmothers.

Layer the Last:

I wanted to use up a buch of yarn left from other projects and this was the result.  I call it "Channel Your Inner Girl."  The sashing between squares is actually raised single crochet.  It provides an interesting texture and lets me know if it is right side up or upside down.  Darling Eldest Daughter says it looks like jelly beans.  What do you think?

So that's how I deal with the night time temps.  Those emotional temps...Blog for another day.
Stay warm, All.
