I confess. I read the Nienie Dialogues. Not every day and I do not "follow" that particular blog. Although now I notice it's called "being a member" rather than "following." Not sure which is worse. Anyway. I read nienie and her incredibly self-absorbed, self-indulgent sister and I am almost always intrigued.
I love looking at their homes. And I am always astonished at the number of "followers" ( professional, chronic readers?) these women have. They earn advertising money based on sidebar ads times the number of "hits" and, frankly, I'd like to be able to cash in on those buckaroos. Currently, I don't have sufficient followers (loyal compadres?) to qualify. And it dawned on me that I have not found my niche. My grotto. My space, as it were.
There seems to be a jillion semi-discontented Mormon women who blog.Of course they have a built in faith based audience who don't know a thing about me. They have handsome husbands and adorable children. They also seem to have large and steady incomes. They shop at Anthropologie and go out to eat A LOT. Not me.
Personally, I do regularly read several fashion based blogs I discovered through one of my children. Each is quite different from the others. One is leather and dark; one is vintage and movie based; and one is thrift shop specials. I love them all. Those bloggers have clearly specialized. They have lots of readers. Advertising bucks? Probably. Not as much as the Mormon gals; but then they haven't been showcased on Oprah either.
Decorating blogs are also some of my favorites. I love peeking at homes (real or imaginary) I do not live in or have to clean. Best part of Sex and the City, in my opinion, was Carrie's apartment. I like the looking, but I do not want to be limited to blogging about paint color trends or couch fabrics. Just gazing at the pictures thank you very much.
So; I need a niche. Semi- curmudgeon? Poverty limited style gourmand? Crippled old fart? All of the above? My life pretty much sucks right now. Maybe that's it for me in this moment. But who the hell wants to read about THAT?
Stay tuned. Things could change any second. Hope springs.
