Everyday Thang

I am one of the lucky ones.

Years ago I figured out what a gift it is to tell someone they are loved.  They might be hoping for the  affection from the gorgeous creature who lives down the street or dreaming for that  fondness from the fuzzy furry creature who is the pet of another.  I can't do much about those moments.  But I give mine every chance I get.  The people I care about and hold dear and who are treasured by me hear "I love you!" from me every time they hear my voice.

And so, when I see or read about how people prance out their love only during this particular season; and how that 'laziness of emotion' or hypocrisy drives so many other folks insane...well, I am never surprised.  I make a point of telling my loved ones that they are loved but I know that's not going to lessen the assholes in the world.  I try not to suffer fools either.

What I am thankful for in this Hallmark holiday (since all the humans are loved and thanked every single day) is Elder House.

Perfect place for me right now.  I never have to wait for the bathroom.  The fridge is stocked (usually) with items I have chosen.  Houseplants are doing remarkably well in the sunlight here. Although the jade is gasping.  My music when or if I want it.  Sleeping whenever I think I can.  Ad infinitum.

My definition of this lucky girl.

Oh, and MY people are very special, too.

10-11-12 Plus One

Cool number from yesterday, yes?

I purposely avoided a specific blogity about the day itself.  Yet, there were several  successful moments for me.

But because of the crafty tricks my "hemorrhage' plays on me now, I cannot recall all the fun experiences right up to the front.  Sorry for  me, too.

Some I do remember:

The bronze on Schemes and Themes.  And if you haven't started to listen to this program you owe it to yourself to do so  You often get to hear ME on the airwaves! Well, get to hear about me on the airwaves actually.  Since Ron and Wil will tell you they don't know how to get phone calls to play and they don't want to learn.  Which I love anyway!

Was able to regain single crochet steps.  Very beginning version, more than the none I could do for the past two months.  Have to replan the gift for Silas but I don't think he will mind.

Am finding the PBS "Call the Midwife" quite enjoyable.  Best watched with hot tea and shortbread cookies.

Received a great phone call from a dear, dear buddy who has just received 'almost' the job of her dreams.  And in this day and age and at the age we are both at 'almost' is pretty damn close!

And have contemplated just the perfect amount of my own mortality for all those so concerned for me.  Tee Hee.

Frenzy

Usually I try to get my laundry at least started early in the morning.  Many of the tenants here at Elder House have professional helpers who begin their work day at nine.  The washing machines fill up quickly.  This past Friday I made it to the laundry room later than I had planned and, yes, all the machines were taken.

No worries.  I perched in my usual spot and opened my book.  Some brilliant individual had propped open the laundry room door by wedging a yellow plastic dustpan underneath.  A blast of air conditioned air swirled into the hall.  Very welcome as the halls are not temperature controlled.

Not all were happy about this.  "Why is that door open?"  The lady in the splashy sundress asked me in a challenging tone.  I told her I didn't know, didn't do it, but was glad for the breeze.  She huffed off,  "Some people are just selfish!"  What?

Leroy (Don't Call Me Sir I Was An Enlisted Man) rolled past and made his usual crack about me guarding the place from all and sundry.  I smiled and assured him I'd let him know if we were under attack.  One of the Dianes had joined me for a bit of wash day conversation and Leroy  loudly pointed out her "size thriteens" in the aisle.  "Move those things outta the way or join me up in my room.  You know what I mean?  Join me?"  Rude and tasteless.  What?

By this time a washer had opened up and I hustled as best I could to start my load of clothes.  How sad is it that my entire wardrobe, so to speak, fits in one machine?  Back in the hall the Other Diane and Kathy had joined us and began a spirited discussion about Grandpa John.  Apparently he has some bladder control issues that the Other Diane had discovered and she was describing an embarassing elevator incident.  I didn't say a word and feigned interest in my book. (Always wanted to use "feigned" in a sentence.)  What is up with these people?

My experiences here, as I've said have been overwhelmingly ones of consideration and kindness.  Was this Friday morning behavior a new thing that I just hadn't seen or heard before?  The days have been steadily getting hotter and maybe that makes old folks act crazy.  A long holiday weekend is near and most of us will not have any fun plans.  Does that induce bad behavior? I'm not sure.  But I got my clean laundry out as soon as it was dry and hightailed it back to my airconditioned room.  Frenzy is just not my style.

And didn't I say that Katie Holmes/Tom Cruise thing wouldn't last?

Happy Anniversary

Not a national holiday, but hot damn, sometime I think it should be.
Today I have been cigarette free for three years!
THREE YEARS!
That's four full term pregnancies.
One completed master's degree.
A stint in the military.
Graduations, births, deaths.
Many changes.
Most of them welcome and embraced.
Some of them painful and resisted,
Slogging along.
Hobbling along.
Trembling along.
Sobbing along.
But moving along all the same.
It's a lonely business this growing old and not having cigarettes to accompany me (I will admit it) has made it all the more difficult.
My old non-judgemental buddy.
Ah, well.

Here I am with nice clean lungs.
They'd be cleaner still if all the folks here at Elder House would obey the 'no smoking indoors' rule and the '10 feet from the exits' rule.  And if they'd keep the reefer puffing to a minimum.
Yes, America!  Geezers get high!  And more often than you'd think.
But no snarking today.
My lungs say thanks.
They're as clean as I can get them,
and so Happy Anniversary to me.

Shake It Up Baby Now

April does have the best holidays but so far, May has had the best weather,  The sunlit colors outside are simply delectable and the fragrance from those lilacs is a gift.  Everyday.  Absolutely free.  My view isn't much, no great architecture, no celebrities passing by, no magical music.  I love it so.

The parking lot across the street is like a theatre in the round.  WAS that a drug deal?  And so much activity on the weekend.  I've watched enough to discern which folks are here to visit their resident relative and are coming with joy and love; from the ones who are here out of duty and obligation.  And I always marvel at how quickly people can walk.

School day afternoons include the Children Parade.  Some cut through the parking lot.  I know I would.  The blocks are huge and using the lot as a shortcut would save hundreds of steps.  I guess that doesn't matter too much to a middle schooler.  These kids seem to actually frolic.  No fighting.  The ones who have shopped at the corner convenience store inevitably share.  Flaming Hot Cheetos and huge neon colored drinks in paper cups with round, clear tops are favorites.  The kids use each others straws without any concern.  I imagine all the mothers hollering about ruined dinner appetites or non-healthy snacks.

One Weeble shaped boy has started smoking.  He holds his cigarette like Colonel Klink.  I want to shake this chap to get him to stop.  He actually shrieked out, "Oh, sweet baby Jesus!" the other day when he dropped his smoke in a puddle.  I immediately empathised.

Cinco De What Oh?

I'm pretty sure that I read that Cinco de Mayo is another made up holiday.  That is, it is not a Mexican holiday celebrated by Mexicans in Mexico.  It's not even a holiday that Mexicans in the United States celebrate.  It's a holiday in the United States that commemorates a little battle that has a teeny connection to Mexican independence.  Right?

Anyway, it used to be a very big deal at the school where I used to sub.  Mexican flags on every bulletin board.  Tacos on the lunch menu. "Latino" music, or what the very white principal deemed appropriate, playing over the intercom during passing periods.  Ho hum.  This is very not politically correct, but the Mexican kids laughed their asses off.  Me too, but privately of course.

Today is Saturday, so there won't be any of these school time shenanigans.  There is the first street carnival of the season.  It's just a few blocks from Elder House where I live.  The curmudgeons are already grousing about the added traffic, accordion music, and many wandering unsupervised children. One old buzzard went on a rant because a kid was sitting on HIS bench.  Keep in mind that it is not even eight in the morning as I write this post.  Ho hum.
So many things set me off these days, I am happy that Cinco de Mayo isn't one of them.  A holiday with music, food, and carnival rides that also tweaks the collective noses of grouchy old white guys is fine in my book.  Ole'!
